A brooch famously worn by Jacqueline Kennedy during her tenure as First Lady has fetched more than twice its estimated value at Hindman’s inaugural Important Jewelry auction in New York City. The auction, featuring 378 notable lots, took place last Thursday.

The brooch, a stunning piece with a Grecian gold coin encircled by an 18k gold leafy wreath adorned with emerald accents, was originally projected to sell for $6,000 to $8,000. Instead, it achieved a remarkable $20,955. Adding historical significance, the lot included a photograph of Kennedy wearing the brooch during a 1961 White House reception held for the wives of American Society of Newspaper Editors members.

This sale marked a strong debut for Hindman’s Important Jewelry series, with the entire auction bringing in $3.8 million. The top-performing item was a platinum ring featuring a 10.89-carat round brilliant-cut diamond flanked by yellow gold infinity bands embellished with approximately 6 carats of princess-cut diamonds. Estimated at $80,000–$120,000, the ring ultimately sold for $190,500.

Kennedy’s brooch came with an impeccable provenance, having been part of the Sotheby’s 1996 Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis auction. In this latest sale, it was consigned by a private collector from Lake Forest, Illinois. The lot also included the original Sotheby’s box, auction tag, catalog, and a copy of Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years, further enhancing its value to collectors.
