Thomas’ father explained that his son’s sudden decision was completely out of character. Kingston left no will, had recently booked a ticket to South Africa, and had told his parents that he planned on visiting them more regularly.
The sentiment was seconded by Lady Gabriella, who told the court that Kingston had never expressed any suicidal ideations to his family or friends. She described their marriage as ‘deeply loving and trusting’.

Buckingham Palace’s statement at the time of his death announced that the King and Queen had been informed of Thomas’s passing, and ‘join Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and all those who knew him in grieving a much-loved member of the family’, as well as sending their ‘most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Gabriella and to all the Kingston family.’
