Tiffany & Co. has added a piece of history to its collection with the acquisition of a rare 18k gold pocket watch tied to the Titanic tragedy. The timepiece, which sold for a record-breaking $1.97 million, once belonged to Captain Arthur H. Rostron of the RMS Carpathia, the ship that famously rescued survivors of the Titanic in 1912.
This historic watch was a gift from three prominent Titanic survivors—Mrs. John B. Thayer, Mrs. John Jacob Astor, and Mrs. George D. Widener—who sought to express their gratitude for Captain Rostron’s bravery during the rescue. The pocket watch features the captain’s initials, “AHR,” engraved on the back and a heartfelt message from the survivors, making it a profound symbol of compassion and heroism.
