Erin Doherty might have made her name playing Princess Anne in The Crown, but now the actress is playing royalty of an altogether different variety in the upcoming drama A Thousand Blows.
The new Disney+ outing, released on 21 February, sees the star take a turn as Mary Carr. Leader of the Forty Elephants, the glamorous all-female crime syndicate that operated in London’s East End in the 19th and 20th century, Carr took London high society by storm. Along with her band of merry sisters, the group orchestrated robberies from luxury shops, with her scandalous sisterhood all disguised as a coterie of Bright Young Things.
‘She is so forthright in her ambitions,’ said Doherty of the crime queen. ‘She is so strong and I’ve only realised months after wrapping that I’ve managed to take that with me, which is unreal.’
A Thousand Blows will see Steven Knight, the mastermind behind Peaky Blinders, return to the renegade world of British crime. The series certainly won’t be pulling any punches: BAFTA winner Malachi Kirby stars as Hezekiah Moscow, a talented Jamaican boxer whose rise through the ranks of the underground world of illegal pugilism leads him straight to Carr’s cunning crew.
