Christmas aboard a Cunard liner has always been a truly special affair. During the glamorous era of the 50s, 60s and 70s, those seeking a winter adventure would enjoy a December voyage, celebrating the festive season with dressing up, live bands, surprises for children and even musical chairs played in the ballroom, with guests young and old joining in the fun. It was an annual tradition for Father Christmas to stop by, reading ’Twas the Night Before Christmas to the delighted children aboard. Meanwhile the adults could enjoy fresh eggnog, served throughout the Christmas period.
To this day, the ship is magnificently decorated each year, complete with a towering tree in the Grand Lobby and vivid red Poinsettia flowers throughout. Each liner also has a number of unique additions, like the Wind in the Willows character installations aboard QM2 and a Nutcracker theme for QV and QE. Guests can experience delights like bespoke gifts, grand Christmas teas, festive music, films and entertainment, an entire gingerbread village built by the galley team, a special carol performance (complete with a snow machine), religious services and even a Christmas market and Santa’s grotto. And the lucky individuals staying in the Top Suites can enjoy a full size, decorated Christmas tree or Menorah in luxurious rooms.
